Steel drum band Panachea entertain in Slough High Street

Story from Slough Express by Tara O'Connor

The sound of the Caribbean filled the town centre on Saturday when a steel band took to the high street.

Panachea brought the tunes to Slough, as well as running workshops for members of the public to get involved.

The band is part of Slough based youth music education group SWIPE.

The community steel band is made up of people of all ages and has been running for 30 years.

Jamie Green, director of the group, said: "It is all about getting people involved.

"There was a lot of young people that took part in the workshop. They learnt to play the pans and how all the pans are different."

Saturday's performance was one of a series of workshops taking place organised by SWIPE as part of the Arts Council England funded project called Home.

The next installment will see Slough’s own X Factor star Nate Simpson perform with Natalie Gauci, winner of Australian Idol.

The final week will be an Irish Fleadh with music and dancing.
