Primary School students visit NSSO

Exposing the nation’s youth to culture and the arts during their most impressionable years is crucial for their understanding and appreciation of this country’s history says culture minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly.

This theme of early exposure to the arts was perfectly summed up during a visit by the Chaguanas Government Primary School to the home of the National Steel Symphony Orchestra (NSSO) at the National Academy for the Performing Arts, Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain, recently.

Students, 114 of them, had unrestricted access to the national music outfit’s rehearsal space during a special tour by members of the NSSO. The youngsters benefitted from a one-on-one session with the musicians and learned more about the performing entity. They were also treated to some of the orchestra’s delightful renditions on its repertoire. The students were left awestruck after being in an orchestra space and vowed to return.

Akua Leith, artistic director of the NSSO was delighted to host the students as part of their tour of the National Academy for the Performing Arts. “I am always heartened and encouraged as a musician when our young children visit our space, witness our performances, and leave the room with dreams to become musicians. This is one of the inspirational aspects of my job, and I absolutely enjoy it.”
